Cadwalader Attorneys Mentor Brooklyn High School
Attorneys from Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft LLP, one of the world’s leading law firms, were honored to serve as mentors to James Madison High School students in Brooklyn, New York, at the 2010 New York City Mock Trial Tournament. The high school out-argued 94 public and private schools competing in the New York City area to become the 2010 Champions. The team heads to Albany next week to compete in the State Championship.
“This competition is a challenging, collaborative effort among teachers, students, and a group of very dedicated Cadwalader attorneys,” stated William Natbony, Counsel in the firm’s Litigation department and supervisor of the firm’s mentoring efforts on behalf of James Madison High School. “This competition is a valuable teaching tool as students prepared and presented witness examinations and oral arguments in real courtroom settings, in front of real federal and state court judges. We are proud of the students and commend them for their hard work and their achievement,” he said.
Cadwalader has had a long term relationship with James Madison High School. The firm is one of the founding members of the Citywide MENTOR program which pairs law firms with public high schools. Since 1982, Cadwalader’s commitment of resources to and its relationship with James Madison High School has grown tremendously. Currently, approximately 25 attorneys and staff participate in this specialized program designed for students with an interest in the law. Cadwalader continues to host lectures, discussion groups and events both at the school and at the Firm’s offices, as part of this mentoring program.
“Cadwalader is dedicated to pro bono and community efforts that honor the practice of law, that serve our community and that truly make a difference,” stated Christopher White, Chairman of the Firm. The students at James Madison have had an important experience which we hope will influence how they think of themselves and how they perceive the law in society. We thank them for the opportunity to be a guide in their learning, and congratulate them in their victory,” he said.
