US Climate Policy a “Double-edged Sword”

Partner Peter Malyshev spoke with ESG Investor about the future of US climate policy under a Trump presidency in an article, "US Climate Policy a 'Double-edged Sword'," published on November 20.

ESG investors are waiting to see how the incoming administration will impact clean energy initiatives. While some experts fear a rollback of policies beneficial to sustainable investing, others have reason to believe that factors such as the growth potential of sustainable industries in the US and the changing global landscape mean that the future of ESG remains strong. Additionally, fighting to remove policies such as the Inflation Reduction Act ("IRA") may not be worth the administration's time.

“To remove the IRA you would need another act of Congress – but does the new administration want to pick that fight?” argues Peter. “The net effect [of rolling back US climate policies] is just not going to be that big, because there is no federal scheme to speak of right now. The voluntary carbon market, for instance, only represents a few billions, so it’s a drop in the ocean. As such, the key message is: stop being nervous, and stay the course.”
