Cadwalader has bolstered its white collar defense and investigations capabilities with the addition of former CFPB Senior Counsel Rachel Rodman and former U.S. Deputy Associate Attorney General Mark Grider. In addition, a market-leading litigation team from Boies Schiller – led by Nicholas Gravante and including Karen Dyer, Philip Iovieno and Lawrence Brandman – will be joining the firm.

Rachel joined earlier this year and has strengthened the firm’s ability to counsel clients in connection with consumer-focused litigation, compliance and investigation matters. She focuses her practice on representing banks, specialty finance companies, and other financial services institutions in government investigations and litigation in trial and appellate courts. She joins us from Williams & Connolly.

Rachel served for four years at the CFPB, including two years as Senior Counsel in the Legal Division, where she represented the agency in federal district court and advised agency leadership, including the Director and General Counsel, on emerging issues under Title X of the Dodd-Frank Act. She then was an Enforcement Attorney in the Division of Supervision, Fair Lending and Enforcement, leading investigations of banks and nonbanks finance companies involving mortgage servicing, consumer reporting, overdraft practices and debt collection.

Mark, who joined the firm last week, has served across numerous administrations during his nearly 20 years in the federal government. He most recently served as a Deputy Associate Attorney General at the U.S. Justice Department, where his portfolio included criminal matters relating to the Antitrust Division, Civil Division, the Consumer Protection Branch, Environment and Natural Resources Division and the Tax Division. |
He is a subject matter expert on the False Claims Act, healthcare fraud, the opioid crisis, and competition and consumer harm in the online marketplace. Mark liaised on policy initiatives relating to elder fraud and financial exploitation, criminal antitrust procurement collusion and COVID-19 pandemic issues.
Prior to this role, Mark served as Senior Associate Counsel and Special Assistant to the President in the Office of the White House Counsel, advising White House Counsel and senior administration officials on broad oversight and regulatory matters involving the White House, Health and Human Services, and federal agencies, contributing special expertise on health care regulatory and litigation matters and science and technology oversight and policy issues. Between early 2019 and September 2020, he assisted on Congressional oversight and investigations and coordinated responses to related litigation, FOIA requests, COVID-19 pandemic response matters, and Inspector General investigations.
Mark will lead Cadwalader’s Crisis Management and Congressional Investigations Practice.
The addition of Nick, Karen, Phil and Larry further establishes the firm's reputation as a destination litigation practice.
Nick, the former managing partner at Boies Schiller, is widely known as one of the most formidable litigators in the country. He will lead the firm's Commercial Litigation practice. Nick's practice ranges from complex commercial cases to securities and antitrust litigation, as well as criminal cases, internal investigations and appeals. For two decades, he has consistently been honored as one of the country’s top litigators who handles high-profile matters as well as highly-sensitive, confidential matters resolved behind the scenes.
Phil joins the firm as co-leader of the Antitrust Litigation practice, which he will lead along with my D.C. colleague Brian Wallach. Phil's practice focuses on representing plaintiffs and defendants in antitrust and other complex commercial litigation. He has litigated in federal and state courts throughout the country, including having led or co-led multiple jury trials through verdict. Phil also maintains an active traditional antitrust litigation practice, and has represented a number of leading corporations for many years.
Karen is a nationally-renowned trial lawyer, representing various Fortune 500 companies and other multimillion and multibillion dollar entities in all aspects of commercial litigation, including antitrust, civil RICO, securities and bankruptcy law.
Larry brings more than 35 years of experience in bankruptcy advisory and litigation matters. Prior to joining Boies Schiller, he served in various senior leadership roles at Lehman Brothers Holdings, Goldman Sachs and Credit Suisse First Boston.
